Visiting Scholars & Researchers

Visiting Scholars & Researchers join a community of the world’s leading minds and build long-term relationships through mutually beneficial and stimulating intellectual exchanges at Stanford University.

VISITING SCHOLARS MEET THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA

  • They are experienced professionals, academics, or practitioners (not recent graduates). They can come from universities, government research laboratories, NGOs, foundations, or private corporations. A PhD is not required.
  • They have built a career of major accomplishments in their fields (10-20 years).
  • They are very-self driven and have some experience in conducting research independently.
  • They are eager to actively engage with the Stanford community, deepen their knowledge, and embrace new modes of thinking.
  • They bring a high level of optimism and energy.

VISITING RESEARCHERS MEET THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA

  • They are have obtained a PhD degree, or are currently enrolled in a PhD program. They can come from universities, government research laboratories, NGOs, foundations, or private corporations.
  • They have built a career of major accomplishments in their fields (10-20 years).
  • They are very-self driven and have some experience in conducting research independently.
  • They are eager to actively engage with the Stanford community, deepen their knowledge, and embrace new modes of thinking.
  • They bring a high level of optimism and energy.

DESCRIPTION

Scholars and Researchers spend 3-12 months at Stanford. Their time is divided between working directly with us at ChangeLabs on our portfolio of projects, learning our scaled innovation methodology, and independently advancing their own project and/or research interests. ChangeLabs facilitates connecting Scholars and Researchers with relevant Stanford faculty members, as desired.

BENEFITS

Visiting Researchers & Scholars gain access to Stanford University’s stimulating global network and community. Because this is a recognized position at the university, visiting researchers enjoy the privileges of campus members, including:

  • Access to unlimited summits, events, and projects that are being led by Stanford experts.
  • Eligibility to attend a Stanford course or participate in a seminar, free of charge (subject to permission from the instructor).
  • Full library access, access to SUNET (the Stanford University data network).
  • Eligibility for discounts at the Stanford Bookstore, access to university athletic facilities, staff-rate tickets to athletic events, eligibility to purchase a campus parking permit, and access to off-campus housing information.
  • Participants have office space (likely shared) on campus to interact with each other informally.

SPONSORSHIP COSTS & FEES

The Visiting Scholar position has a monthly tuition of $5,000 associated with it (or $50,000 for 1 year). Visiting Scholars generally come from companies or other institutions that sponsor the tuition fees.

The Visiting Researcher's monthly fee is $957 for the 2014-2015 academic year and will be $991 for the 2015-2016 academic year.

For the 2015-2016 academic year, the Health Fee will be $197 per quarter.

Both Scholars and Researchers are required to have proof of health insurance coverage as a Visiting Researcher throughout their appointment.

APPLICATION

In order for the Internal Committee to consider your application, please answer in a 1-2 page cover letter 1) Why you wish to become a ChangeLabs Visiting Scholar or Researcher and 2) What specific research questions or projects would you be interested in exploring at Stanford. Each Visiting Scholar or Researcher needs to have a sponsor who is a Stanford faculty member (full professor). You will work with this faculty sponsor in addition to collaborating directly with the ChangeLabs team. In your application, please identify professors whom you would be interested in working with.
